Motorcycles are a fun, exciting way to get around. Riding a motorcycle often comes with a community of people who share their excitement in this hobby. However, as fun as they are, motorcycles can be dangerous. Being in an accident while riding a motorcycle can be life-threatening, since there is no exterior protection. Here are the common causes of motorcycle accidents, and how to avoid them.

The most common cause of motorcycle accidents is the negligence of other drivers. This can be a driver’s failure to see a motorcyclist, or a failure to yield. However, most accidents between motorcyclists and other drivers happen in intersections, when a car is making a left turn. Drivers may think they have the right of way, or they may not see the motorcycle coming. While these types of collisions happen with all types of vehicles, they are much more dangerous when they involve motorcyclists. The best way to avoid being injured by another driver is to look for signs that a car may turn. Motorcyclists should slow down as much as possible, and assume that the other driver can’t see them. Driving defensively is the best way to avoid this type of accident.

Dangerous road conditions or inclement weather can cause accidents to motorcyclists as well. Cars are much larger and able to easily recover from situations that could be fatal for someone riding a motorcycle. Loose gravel, potholes, slippery surfaces, and debris in the roadway cause many accidents. In order to avoid accidents caused by road conditions, motorcyclists should be aware of all of their surroundings, from other cars to issues with the pavement. It is also safer to avoid driving in inclement weather at all, since these conditions are difficult for other vehicles, and for motorcycles.

Reckless driving is dangerous to all drivers, but especially for motorcyclists. Reckless driving can include speeding and driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol. While motorcycles are able to drive much faster than other vehicles, speeding makes it much easier for the driver to lose control of their motorcycle. Speeding also decreases the reaction time needed to best prevent a wreck. Along with speeding, drunk driving is a large factor in motorcycle accidents. Driving while intoxicated is illegal for everyone on the road. Because riding a motorcycle requires quick reflexes, alcohol can prevent the driver from making split-second decisions that could save their life.

Riding a motorcycle is a hobby that many Georgians love, and being safe can help motorcyclists enjoy this pastime for years to come. However, accidents can still happen.
