The kids are out of school for a week, and you’re planning a family trip for spring break. Keep these spring break safety tips for families in mind as you hit the road, whether you’re heading to the beach, the Appalachian Trail, or whitewater rafting on the Chattahoochee.

Were you injured in a car collision, slip and fall, or other accident? Contact our experienced Atlanta injury lawyer to schedule a consultation at (678) 310-2827.

1. Don’t Forget the Sunscreen

The sun can damage your skin and lead to future skin cancers. Skin damage starts at a young age, and exposure to the sun’s harmful UV rays has a cumulative effect that can affect people much later in life. Ensure you and your children wear protective clothing and sunscreen of at least SPF 15.

Babies under six months have very little natural UV skin protection and should wear full protective clothing and stay under an umbrella or tent during your outings. You also need to protect your baby from the heat with loose clothing that breathes.

2. Practice Safe Habits on the Water

If you’re enjoying time out on a boat at sea or tubing on a river, you and your family should wear life jackets and other appropriate safety gear as instructed by your captain or rafting guide. Instruct your family on how to break out of a rip current, signal for help from a boat, and deploy the available safety equipment.

3. Wash Your Hands Frequently

While you may keep hand sanitizer in your beach bag for quick cleanup, nothing beats soap and water. Whenever possible, stop to wash your hands, and encourage your family to do the same. You aren’t the only ones traveling this week; people often travel sick because they’ve already made plans.

Kids are perfect incubators for strep throat, colds, and the flu. Your children can be healthy when you begin your vacation but quickly feel worse as the illness takes hold. They can also spread the illness to you, your spouse, and your other children. Handwashing is the number one way to prevent the spread of germs.

4. Stay Hydrated

No matter where your vacation takes you, one of the most important travel tips is to stay hydrated. Piña coladas, beer, and soda are not appropriate beverages to maintain proper hydration. Even sports drinks may contain too much sugar and salt to drink all day. Keep water on hand to prevent dehydration and heat exhaustion.

Alternate one serving of water with each sugary or alcoholic drink you consume to help you enjoy your beverages without feeling the ill effects of dehydration in Georgia during a hot spring break. Keep an eye out for the signs of dehydration and heat exhaustion, including:

  • Lightheadedness

  • Headache

  • Fatigue

  • Dizziness

  • Confusion

  • Flushing

  • High body temperature

  • Heavy sweating

If you or a family member stops sweating in the heat, take that person to a nearby medical facility immediately. No longer sweating indicates heat stroke, a severe condition brought about by dehydration in high temperatures.

5. Pay Attention to the Road When Driving

You won’t know the area if you and your family take a trip out of town. Use audio navigation in your car to direct you where to go, and pay attention to road signs. Merge safely when you need to enter a turn lane or enter a highway from an onramp.

If you stay in town for spring break, remember these spring break safety tips still apply. The amount of traffic from out of town could increase, and these drivers don’t know where they’re going. Leave plenty of stopping distance and room to adjust between you and other drivers.
