The weather is warming up, so everybody is spending more time outside. While it’s a great idea to get out and enjoy this spring weather, it’s still important to be safe. Read Greathouse Trial Law’s blog to learn 4 ways you and your family can stay safe in the springtime.

Safety in the Outdoors

That springtime sun can be intense, even if it’s cloudy. Be sure to wear sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher. You should also wear lightweight clothing in light colors and drink plenty of water. Spring is also the perfect time to brush up on the prevention and symptoms of heatstroke.

It also might get warm enough to start heading towards the pools or lakes! If you and your family are planning on venturing out, be sure to keep an eye on your children while they’re in the water. Ensure that they have suitable flotation devices, as well.

Spring Cleaning

Spring is also when lots of us start cleaning and doing maintenance on our houses. Remember to clean your smoke detectors and replace the batteries if needed. You should also clean your stove hood and around your dryer to prevent fires.

If you’re planning on starting some yardwork, always make sure that you wear the proper clothing, especially if you’re working with pesticides and fertilizers. You should also be aware of any harmful plants around your home – mainly poison ivy and poison oak.

When operating any tools, whether indoors or outdoors, be sure that you stay smart about what you’re doing. Never leave your mower unattended, and clean up your work areas when you’re finished with your projects.

Dealing with Wildlife

We’re already starting to see the return of wildlife to our neighborhoods. While some are fun to see again, others, not so much. It’s vital to be safe around these stinging insects. Most stings come from yellow jackets, wasps, hornets, and fire ants. It’s also important to prevent mosquitos and mosquito bites, as they can carry disease.

Most of these bugs aren’t aggressive when there is no perceived threat, but it’s always best to proceed with caution. Make sure you use the right repellants, and if you are stung, be sure to have antihistamines to reduce any adverse reactions.

If you or your family members start to have an allergic reaction after the sting, you should seek medical attention. Symptoms can include tightness in the chest, dizziness, difficulty breathing, nausea, tongue swelling, or a loss of consciousness.

Getting Outside

Spring also marks the return of outdoor activities, like bicycle riding, hiking, and camping. Biking is popular in Atlanta, but it’s crucial to be safe when getting out on the trails. Be sure that your family has helmets and that everyone knows about bicycle safety.

Hiking is also a great way to get outdoors and enjoy the weather. Atlanta has many easy hiking trails for you and your family to enjoy! Make sure that you wear the right shoes and bring lots of water if you plan to hike this spring.

Your family may also enjoy camping! Whether you’re taking an RV or pitching a tent, always make safe and smart decisions. Be careful around the fire, drink plenty of water, and know your limits.

Stay Safe

Spring comes with lots of fun activities, but there is still a risk of injury. If you or a loved one is injured due to someone else’s actions, you may be entitled to financial compensation. The attorneys at Greathouse Trial Law are here to help.
